Research

In 2005 I obtained my PhD from the Social Psychology Department of the University of Amsterdam on the topic of sex differences in anger regulation. After a visit abroad to James Gross’ Psychophysiology Laboratory (Stanford University, USA) and being a postdoctoral researcher at UCL (University of Louvain, Belgium), I am currently working as Assistant Professor in this Lab.

My research evolves around the topic of emotion and emotion regulation and how these concepts connect to health behavior, with a focus on emotional eating. I mainly conduct experimental research and my studies try to answer questions like ‘How do emotions affect eating behavior?’, ‘Do emotions actually affect eating behavior?’, and ‘Why should emotions affect eating behavior?’. Moreover, I look at general beliefs regarding emotional eating, how emotions affect processes like liking & wanting, and I am particularly interested in the link between emotion regulation and consumption.

Teaching

My most favorite teaching-task is supervising bachelor and master's theses of students, so students are welcome to participate in one of my projects throughout the whole year. Further I am coordinator of the course ‘Theoretical Foundations of Clinical and Health Psychology’ and ‘Behavioral Regulation I: Affect and Motivation’ (course in the Research Master “Social and Health Psychology”: SHP). I am also involved in the courses ‘Health Psychology’ and ‘Health Promotion’.
