During my research master on social and health psychology, I developed a growing interest in self-regulation within the field of (responsible) sexual behavior.

More specifically, my interest was triggered by the finding that the number of people in the Netherlands who contract sexually transmitted infections (STI) including HIV/Aids has increased steadily over the last decade. There is evidence to suggest that this increase does not necessarily result from a lack of motivation to use condoms, but from the fact that people have trouble translating their good intentions into actual goal-directed behavior.

Under supervision of Marieke Adriaanse and John de Wit, I am currently investigating whether an intervention promoting the use of specific action plans (i.e., implementation intentions) as a means to overcome this ‘intention-behavior gap’ promotes condom use in STI clinic clients
